Dear Blizzard Garrison Developers

Dear Blizzard Garrison Developers,

Let me take a moment to introduce myself.  I am the commander of the free armies from Azeroth on Draenor.  I have saved the world from destruction, I have fought kings, old gods, and threats of all sizes.  I have all the faction leader's ears and their highest respect.  I am privy to knowledge directly from leadership that no one else could know because I have earned the utmost level of trust.  Whenever there is anything that needs to be done I am the first person that is sought out to solve the problem.

I have outposts in every area of Draenor and lead all the wonderful men and women that defend them and they all trust my choices and follow my commands, without question.  I have hundreds of followers that left their lives behind just to be with me and they would go out on my command on what could possibly be a mission they will never return from, never even once questioning my orders.  I am respected, honorable, and skilled as both a fighter and a leader.

I have fought countless battles, retrieved precious artifacts, collected badges of honor from completing tasks no one else could, and traveled from one end of the world to the next building a legend like none have ever imagined possible all while receiving accolades every step of the way.  I've friends, confidants and informants all over the place and the most powerful beings in the world either fear me, or come to me for assistance.

I am a legend.  I am a leader.  I am the last hope for our world and I have never let the people of our world down.

So I ask, with the greatest respect, please, by the light of Elune, why can you not teach my followers to mine and herb on my garrison for me?  A person of my stature should not be tied down by such petty tasks, I've got an army to lead and a world to save.  I believe I am busy enough.

Thank you for your time,
The Grumpy Elf

  1. I think the operating term for that Design Lead is 'Mister Garrison'.

While I agree with your point, esp. since Cata we've been hailed as big-bad-heroes-of-all-The-One from level 1 onward while still expecting us to shovel poop and culling pigs, so menial labor does fit the pattern of Blizz sloppy story-telling.

Wether having the Mine and Garden to begin with (let alone occupy no plot) is a topic for another day ;)

    1. Would you like to come be my follower and mine for me? The pay is good and I have lifetime benefits to both you and your family. :)

It is kind of funny we can have them do everything for us, except for the most repetitive task.

  2. I would like to add that as the commander and hero and leader of all these folks it'd be nice if there was a small room in the garrison for me. A place to crash that's not the barn... or the barracks with the rank and file. Failing that I'd settle for an office. Just seems strange there's no space in the garrison for the commander.

    1. I think the artifact room is intended to be our hang out. Not 100% about that but being we have all our goodies there it must be our personal space.

  3. Well in my opinion they couldn't do it any other way.

Having a gathering profession either on a main or an alt was always a choice. Even if someone had the profession they might not be bothered to go and mine/herb for themselves everytime they needed something. That's why people could sell on the AH and make money gathering.

Blizz have made self-gathering easier than ever with first the farm, then the mine/herb garden. So easy in fact that the bottom has completely fallen out of the market for those professions. However, those professions still exist because self-gathering still requires effort. For some the effort doesn't equal the reward.

I get what you are saying and I agree 100%. It doesn't make sense. Even the lumberjacks agree "I'll get that for you commander, don't you have a world to save?" when marking Timber. However, from a gameplay perspective blizz have to make it not just login and get the mats, otherwise they might as well do away with the professions. They are quite possibly heading in that direction anyway but it's like the last stop. It still requires some time spent, so some people will still be too lazy to do it, or they will want more than what they have etc.

Please don't think I'm saying you are lazy, please don't misunderstand me, I am not saying that at all. I'm just thinking about blizz's gameplay reasoning against your very logical storytelling reason. Oh I really hope I've explained that right.

For what it's worth I don't mind the daily mine/herb chore. I do it when I need it which right now is everyday. However, like the farm in Pandaria, it'll soon get switched to when I feel like it, or when I need it. I used to do a few days on, a week or so off with the farm. I would get all my chars to plant herbs for a few days, get a nice stock, make all the flasks for the raid team for a couple of weeks, then rinse and repeat when we were close to running out again. It was very easy to do it, yeah it takes time but it's something I can do like archaeology or levelling when watching TV in my other window, so I really don't mind.

Though I do agree with you 100% that a hero of my paladins rank should not have to do such menial chores. I also want to know where the commanders bunk is in the garrison, as I should not have to share heh :)

    1. They made all other professions just log in and collect. But I get what you are saying. They made it super easy, the material it sitting right there for you to gather, and still it does not seem worth it. Some people would rather pay than gather. Look at cloth, fish, leather, meat, which are all things you still need to actually gather. They have solid markets because people do not want to do the work of going out to get them.

I stopped mining at all during the week. I only do it on weekends. With all my alts, I do not have that sort of time to mine every day. The reward does not equal the effort.

I think we sleep with the artifacts in the town hall. Doesn't seem to be any other reason for that room.

    2. "Well in my opinion they couldn't do it any other way. ... gameplay ..."

From the gameplay perspective, they should have made the mine and the garden small buildings instead of making them available for everyone. And they should have only dropped stones / seeds if you have the requisite profession. THEN these buildings would have been of great value to gatherers and of some value to non-gatherers, AND the material market wouldn't be in the trash bin.

(Seriously, I am constantly amazed how it takes all of 5 minutes to see what would have worked better than they did. Not just in this place, everywhere.)

    3. I would have liked the other 2 gathering professions, skins and cloth to have representative buildings where the stuff just appears like it does in the mine and garden. Seems almost unfair to tailors and leather workers that they still need to go out and gather, be it by hand or through the barn, whereas the other gathering materials come to you as is.

Blizzard is good at coming up with ideas, very bad at working them out before they add them. I could point out hundreds of things they have done that could have been done better if they just took a few minutes to think about it first.

  4. I fully agree, and would also like the ability to hire and fire the employees as well - that terse Gilnean b*tch that is next to the mine entrance is getting on my nerves!

  5. LMAO that did not even occur to me. As the laziest person in WoW, I am not ashamed to say that i frequently let my mine rot. Herbs on the other hand... I love flowers. And they're useful to me for raiding and for tailoring. Ore on the other hand...

But imagine if they did all those menial tasks for you. What a brilliant idea! Great seed of thought there Elf.

    1. Nice lets push it on to blizzard so they do it. ;)

With as many alts as I like to run and try to keep active on, doing the mine was the first thing that got cut off my list of things to do. So much wasted time. I really hate to waste time and even if I love the resources, I could not help but think of it as wasting my time.

    1. Nice one, but you missed one thing. Only "my" legend matters in "my" game. I do not know those 9,999,999 others and the 9 or 24 others that were with me on some of those occasions were followers of mine, not legends themselves. ;)

  7. I think the mine fits the commander lore actually pretty well.

Because you arent actually going into your mine to pull an 8 hour shift and mine up a bunch of minerals into a stack. You are more like the manager, coming through once a day to check and collect the materials your miners have harvested that day.

Think of it this way: You have your team of goblins/humans in the mine, picking at the walls 24/7. They are the ones actually working the mine and collecting the resources. As they gather it they put in it piles against the wall, so you can collect it easily. If you have a follower in the mine, he increases production and is even able to put some of the collected resources in carts for you.

Then once a day the commander sweeps through and does a 10 minute inspection, taps each collected pile of ore a few times to check the quality and goes back outside to give it to the foreman for processing.

Its your workers actually doing all the work. You, the commander, just does a daily inspection and signs off on the work orders, as any good manager would do.

    1. Thinking of it that way, as you are just passing through checking on them, makes much more sense. However, what are they doing all day. If I pass through and in five minutes get more than the 0 they get all day long? They should still supply us some, even if we do nothing. Otherwise they are not doing anything.

But yes, the work orders part does seem like a manager part. The collection part doesn't.

    2. I try to pretend like the gathering the player does in the mine, isnt actually mining but just collecting. This helps because I've never had a character with the mining profession, so I dont have a history of hitting nodes out in the world a few times with my pick and collecting ore.

I have however dug holes in real life with a shovel and pick. It takes quite a few more swings than 5 to do Anything. So it is easy for me to pretend that the piles of ore along the wall of the mine have actually been stacked there by my goblin miners, and it took them all day to dig that ore out of the ground and pile it up for me.

And when I dont check the mine for a few days, and come back to the exact same amount of ore after 3 days of goblin mining as there would be after 1 day of goblin mining, I just assume the tricksey little gobbos have stolen the extra while I wasnt watching them. They are goblins after all.

    3. What would be nice, in my opinion, is if it built up if you did not mine for a few days. Like lets say it spawns a dozen nodes. On day 2 there would be 24, day 3 there would be 36, etc. Up to 5 days for instance and 60 nodes and let ti stack up. Maybe that would be nice, a way to make it not feel like something you have to do, so to speak.

Either way, I only pick on weekends now. Don't really need more, but always feel like I am missing something by not picking every day.

    4. I guess you are missing out on primal spirits, but other than that, its no big deal.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, that is the only driving factor to doing it. If you get lucky you can get enough spirits for 2 or maybe even 3 savage bloods a week and I do not know about your server but on mine they still go for 2K each. So one character can make 4-6K just from the mine each week. I have 9 already with mines running, so that is like losing as much as 36-54K per week.

So the spirits do have value. But at the moment I do not really need the gold anyway to go out of my way mining.

  8. I want to kick that pug in the butt for all it does is rub it's self all the time. And Lioness - tie her to a catapult and launch her butt over the wall. Oh well. Still on number 1. Cant't get in the mood to make any others from 90 to 100. too intense - like being a repo man

    1. I don't think the leveling another is so much the issue, it is the knowing what you need to do at 100 that is the issue.

      Delete
    2. nah, it's the leveling of another - I know what I mean.

    3. So you did not like the questing? I actually thought the questing was good. Not really pushing to level any more myself right now but I already have 5 100s, so that is a lot in a short time to begin with.
