Would You Play A Shadow Stalker?

I normally do not put a great deal of stock in leaks but being there was a recent leak about what the next expansion would be and it was by the same guy that leaked warlords originally, and was right, I will play with the idea a little bit.  Even if everyone laughed at his warlords leak, he was right.  So he has earned some trust points from me.  And some of the things he mentioned do line up nicely with some of the things I already know, or believe I know, based on some information I have received.

Admittedly this post could just end up meaning nothing, but it is fun to think about the possibilities.  As the new class, which I believe he mentioned, is called a Shadow Stalker and it uses ranged weapons which puts it in direct competition with hunters for weapons, I consider this sort of a sister class to the hunter.

When I first read about it the two things that popped into mind are as follows...

1) I do not want anyone else competing for my weapon.

I have not seen hunter weapons drop thus far all expansion.  I have not seen any hunters in my group coin a weapon.  So no drops of weapons, no coined weapons, and if it were not for crafted gear, no weapons at all this expansion for hunters makes me really dislike the idea of adding another class that would use the same weapon as mine.

It is already damn near impossible to get a weapon as is, the last thing the hunter class needs is someone else competing for its weapon.  No thank you.

However, maybe with a new class they will increase the drop rate of these weapons, which is entirely possible too.  This would be a good thing, but even if you double 0 drops this expansion, it is still 0 drops this expansion.  So given the option, I would rather not have someone else compete for my weapon thank you very much.  Guns, bows and crossbows are hunter loot, no pun intended.  We do not need to share them.

2) Why not just add a 4th spec for hunters.

The shadow stalkers are basically caster hunters.  It will have 2 DPS specs and a healing spec.  Is this really needed?  No, not at all.  Two of the three hunter specs already have the option to use no pet.  So they are basically like casters.  Also we do not need more ranged classes, there are enough as is.

However, adding a 4h spec to allow hunters to heal could be interesting.  Not exactly the choice I would have went with as I could see a hunter being a tank way before I could see hunters healing.  I think it would be much more reasonable to add a 4th spec, call it a shadow stalker if you wish, and make it a hunter healing class.  There is absolutely no need for a new class.

This idea would be much more preferable to adding another class to the game in my opinion.

With all that said, would I play a shadow stalker?

Absolutely I would.  I could dig the wildstar gunslinger healing model.  Would like to see how blizzard manages it.  I've always played any new class they added, always made any new race they added, so why would this time be any different.

I just question the reasoning behind this class being added if it does indeed turn out to be true.  Why add a new class no one wanted, no one asked for and there is no need for in game?

If they wanted to test out the wildstar gunslinger model they could very easily, as I mentioned, add a 4th spec for hunters to do so.  Just look at people that are in game that are already hunters and healers, people like Vol'Jin whom this will be based on and Tyrande.  Both hunters, both with healing capabilities.  And they are not alone.

There is precedent for adding a 4th spec already, there is reasonable lore behind a hunter having healing capabilities, and there really is no need to clutter the classes even more with more of the same.

I'd think blizzard should spend more time trying to fix what they already have before adding more.  Just look at hunters right now, they have one completely broken spec.  Wouldn't their resources be better spent fixing a class that is already in the game than trying to create a new class that is basically the same thing and using the same weapons and the broken class that they are completely ignoring as is.

I actually trust this rumor that was released.  I think the leak has some validity to it.  The sad part is, I do not like what I see knowing they are adding a new class when there are so many broken specs being completely ignored already in the game.

If this does turn out to be true, it is not looking good for me staying around for another expansion.  If blizzard has the balls to thrust a new, unwanted, unwelcome and not required class on us while other specs remain broken, they do not deserve my money any more.  But... if I did stay around, sure, I would play it.  I am a fool that way.

  1. I don't think WoW needs any more classes (especially considering what you've pointed out about the state of certain specs). If they do add one it will almost certainly wear mail since right now it's the only armor used by only 2 classes. So if this rumor comes true, between ranged weapons and mail, hunters will get a lot more competition in gear real fast.
To be fair though, weapon drop mileage varies. Even though you have had horrible luck in WoD, I think it's reasonable to say most of us have seen some weapons drop. I've had 3 upgrades and the only raid I've cleared is HM.

    1. Mail would make sense, to even things out a little bit. I am not looking forward to competing for gear but on the bight side, at least they would not be on our tier token.

I have 5 main hunters in my raid, sometimes more if people come on alts. Yes, I have done a raid with as many as 11 hunters in it. None have gotten a weapon drop. My bad luck has screwed them over. lol

    3. I just feel bad for the other hunters in guild. My luck is screwing them.

We did a run the other night with me tanking and 18 people, we had 8 hunters in the raid. If I log on voice chat at any given time there are usually at least three hunters on there, sometimes those are the only three. I guess I attract hunters.

Sooner or later they have to all start hating me for my luck rubbing off on them. lol

Our guild has seen two ranged weapons this expansion. Both in the same raid lockout, normal blast furnace as we were on maidens heroic and heroic brackenspore

People were surprised when i exclaimed stuff on ts and rolled on the bow. I have since come to therms with the fact i will not see anything replace the crafted gun this expansion.

    5. With weapons being the most important thing for most classes I wonder why they seem to never drop.

Maybe I have jinxed all hunters.

      Sorry.

  2. Could this be a second hero class? Didn't they want to do more hero classes after the death knight? Now, they quickly moved away from that after they saw how powerful they had made deathknights (and if my damage meter is accurate, they still are).

I'm curious to know what the lore on healing hunter is. With Tyrande and Vol'Jin I always saw them as dual class - which I think could be fascinating.

I agree tank! hunter makes more sense than healer! hunter.

I think the biggest problem for me would be the lack of space. I'm out of space to make more alts and have no idea who would get deleted. I can hope for more slots.

    1. It is said to start at level 1. So no hero class here. Just a standard class. Looks like they are keeping away from the hero class idea. But that would not be a bad idea. We have a hero class that can tank, might as well even it out with one that can heal, if they really have to make another class.

That is the lore, dual class. They are hunters that were capable of learning the healing arts. Being they will not make dual classes, just translate it into hunters learned to heal.

I am at 50 as well and will need to delete something. I just hope they do like they did with monks and up it to 12 per server. I have 2 servers where I have one of each, want to keep it that way.

  3. does that have something to do (possibly) with a hidden mob I see and can't find called "Shadow Stalker"? I see there dots in Lion's watch, but can't find them, even firing off a flare.

But more importantly - I got everything needed to get flying on my main. Got all factions to reverend. or however it is spelled. And bingo, up pops 2 achievements. I love those legend medallions. Got 3 and used them from doing follower quests. No idea why I had them stored, but I did, lol.

And you know the answers to all you ask - It is Blizzard - they will change their fookin' mind all the time But I digress - you aren't asking, it's a rhetorical question you are saying - mea culpa.

As to be said, use the item on those spots and it will uncover them and then you will move to the nest part of the quest line.

And no, those are not shadow stalker, they are just some unnamed random iron horde mob we slaughter for fun.

If so, I don't have that item any longer nor get that type of quest again. Not sure where I am but I need to go get some type of light for a shaman I just got to wingman. later and good hunting.

That release does not answer the most important question for me however. I do not care the story of the next expansion, it could be about us picking our noses for all I care, I just want to know if they are going to remove all this RNG from the game. That is all that matters to me and that will be the selling point for me.

If there is no return of a point system I see no reason to keep playing.

  5. I think a hero class that can heal would be rather cool and make it balance a bit. Especially since DKs, which are tank/melee it makes sense to me to have a range/healer. As for competing for ranged weapons, it's about time hunters had some competition for weapons. They are the only class that doesn't have to share weapons.

Though of course the idea means nothing to my personal gameplay because.... well... alts.

    1. It seems it will start at level 1, so no hero class, but I agree, if they feel that "have to" add another class a hero class healer would be nice.

Rogues do not have to share weapons, they are the only ones that use daggers. Sure other classes could use them but as the saying goes, if you are using an agility dagger and you are not a rogue, you are doing it wrong. But I get what you mean.

They will also be mail, I am sure of it. Because it makes sense for them to be mail. Only two classes on mail and at least 3 on all others.

      Delete
    2. Now that's an idea. This shadow stalker can use ranged weapons or duel wield daggers. And wear mail. Though how healing would fit into that I'm not sure. No weapons now are str/int or agi/int, just gear.

    3. The gunslinger in wildstar heals with his guns but they are more like lazer guns so it makes sense they can shoot healing or harmful abilities. Not sure how they will do that with our guns.

    4. Don't Mages use daggers and wasn't that the intent of the "+int" on them? Interesting because I still get as "prizes" (i.e. loot) dang daggers with "+int" on them as a rogue.

    5. There are int dagger and I believe mages and can use them. Most times caster prefer a staff however. No need to find 2 pieces instead of one. But people will use whatever they get that is best in the long run.

  6. I really have zero desire to ever heal on my Hunter. If I wanted to heal, I'd play a Priest as my main. That said, it would be cool if they added a 4th Hunter spec, something like a cross between a Shadow Priest and a Markmanship Hunter. I'm making a big assumption that Shadow Stalker DPS would be a cross between those two and would suffer from movement similar to what a typical clothy would. But the idea sounds pretty cool.

Like you stated, I don't really think that would necessitate a new class though. If they are looking into new classes, why not an actual Necromancer style class like many have longed for ever since (even before) Death Knights were released in Wrath? I could dig a class that has a healing spec that revolves around dark, sinister abilities that heal. HEHE! Kind of along the lines of a "Anti Holy Priest" model. That would be fun to me. I might actually try out my hand at healing if that were the case. ;)

    1. One of the shadow stalker DPS specs is called a shadow hunter, which I am guessing fits what Vol'Jin is. He always seemed half hunter half shadow priest.

I might not "want" to heal on my hunter but if it would decrease my wait time for random content I would. I don't mind healing random content, I just do not tank it.

Even the necromancer could be better done as adding a 4th spec to death knights. I do not see it as something that really needs a new class. Even more so that both shadow stalker and necromancer seem more classes already in game. If they are going to add a class it should be a class that is new and not some offshoot of a class already in game like either of those would be, in my opinion.

  7. Maybe if the new expansion is really about trolls and naga, shadow stalker would fit.

Personally I would support and promote Tinker class - that is, battle engineer.

It can be any role. It can tank, because it would use armor enhancements, making itself a walking bunker (Iron Man, anyone?). It can dps, because bombs and death rays/laser beams and acid clouds. It can heal, because healing beams. So it would also use guns for these roles - for tanking it maybe used as a blowtorch or short distance bazooka. They added many special staves for monks, so why not add many special guns for Tinkers? And they could use hunter guns too.

Gameplaywise, we have VERY many battle engineers recently - at SoO and HFC.

Lorewise, we have the gnome leader who is battle engineer. Moreover, we must have learned few things, observing Blackfuse mechanics and fighting it throughout 2 expansions. Or did we just destroy all the machinery and there was nothing to be learnt?

    1. As for races:

Alliance: Gnomes, Dwarves, Humans, Draenei can be Tinkers.

Horde: Goblins, Orcs, Undead, Blood Elves can be Tinkers.

Night Elves, Worgen, Trolls, Tauren and Pandaren can't be Tinkers with their low interest to machinery and nature bonds.

      Delete
    2. A tinker class would make a lot more sense. A shadow stalker would work better as a 4th spec for a hunter and even some other popular ideas like demon hunter would work better as a 4th spec for a warlock and necromancer would work better as a forth spec for a death knight, at least a tinker is something new and unique. It would deserve its own class. Shadow stalker does not in my opinion.

I think even if I believe we do not need another class that if the class was the tinker class I would be able to support that. It fits and has lore behind it, as you mentioned, and it really is its own thing.

      Delete
    3. I would develop the class enhancement into 4 specs.

A druid has 4. A warrior also has "4" - I'm playing Prot Warrior only because of the Gladiator talent which doesn't let you tank but gives an opportunity to smash everyone with your shield (my idea of warrior) - basically a 4th spec. It is annoying that I get bonus armor and dodge gear while I don't need it. So it's a question of small time when they let us have this separate spec.

      Delete
    4. I love gladiator. I always said, if blizzard wants me to DPS on my warrior they will allow me to do it with a shield on. I was so happy to see them do it.

I think that adding a 4th spec to a couple of class would be a better thing than adding a new class completely.

      Delete
    5. Totally agree there. I would rather see new 4th Specs added to three spec classes than a new class. After you stated it above, yeah... I would be down with a Necromancer spec for DK's (Healing spec). And yes, if Shadow Stalker was a Hunter spec, I would play it (as long as it was a DPS spec that is).

I too love DPS'ing on my Warrior in Gladiator stance. I played as Fury in Wrath as my DPS spec and was bad at it (I did everything correct, but I just didn't have the gear to pull it off). My friend said I was "doing it wrong" and said Warriors are Tanks - so I decked my Warrior out in Tank gear and learned that and loved it - good at it too. Since Wrath I always DPS'ed in my Tank spec. Took a little longer, but it was more fun IMO. Now, I just switch a couple Glyphs and Talents, switch to Gladiator stance and I'm golden (at least for the content I run on my Warrior).

      Delete
    6. Same with my warrior. I only use gladiator for LFR, I tank in every other circumstance. He is a warrior and warriors are supposed to be tanks after all.

I always level as prot. Heck, I leveled as prot when I originally leveled him. Tried arms for a short time and if I had to DPS I would do that, but never liked it. I was a warrior, without a shield I felt naked.

      Delete
    7. Started one warrior as a tank, queued for dungeon. Aggro a pack, all mobs start running in different directions and I can't catch them all with 1 taunt. People die.

That's when I learn that tanking isn't exactly my thing. Warrior switched to Fury, leveled to 100, turned into Gladiator.

Although my night elf switched from Balance to Bear off spec for latest Gorefiend - as a replacement for missing second tank. No mistakes, didn't die, aggroed and taunted properly, although I had my Balance gear on. Guess I could give tanking a ride, although many adds still seem some problem.

    8. I am laughing so hard because I am imagining in my head a gnome warrior feeling all tough, clanging his sword against his shield as he gets ready, then releasing a battle cry he charges in swings a few times, with his eyes closed because he is nervous, and he opens he eyes to see no one standing in front of him and he gets a look of extreme shock on his face. He turns around, sees all his compares dead and then hightails it out of there.

Sorry, I have an active imagination as a writer. lol But it made for a funny image in my head.

Tanking for organized groups is always easier than tanking for randoms. This is why I do not tank randoms. And tanking raids? If you are looking for (in most cases) the easiest job in a raid, play a tank. Raid tanking with smart people, everything scripted, and healers you can trust, is without a doubt the easiest role in the game.

    9. Cool story :)

Actually I have 2 warriors. One is Human/Arms turned Gnome/Fury. The other is Undead/Protection-Fury turned Tauren/Gladiator

    10. They changed both spec and race, that is a big change. Can't believe a gnome and a tauren, talk about two completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

Have to say taurens look awesome with shields. They really have the frame for it.

  8. Hard question for me to answer, I think most of us focus on small quality of life improvements when criticizing the game and when it comes to adding something new are at a complete blank.

That said it does seem odd to add in a new class when there are several specs that could be dropped or improved. The “pure dps classes” seem to weigh heavily on Group Finder queues and the expansion additions could be used to address that. It is not hard to imagine a warlock that could heal by sacrificing its minion’s health or a hunter tanking with a pet. But both these changes come close to the amount of effort that would have been needed to create a new class from scratch however and I would not consider very likely.

Hopefully this class is just a rumor, because it has almost no appeal to me and seems to be such a major use of resources by blizzard. There are still a few other popular fantasy archetypes out there I would like to see before getting a gunslinger/hunter version two. A bard or enchanter that contributes thru party buffs/absorbs. A geomancer/golem, who can use the ground to crush, grab toss foes, or form a powerful body of stone to pound enemies would be wildly different and peak my interest.

I know I just used the word archetype, and recognize this next part as ironic. But I want something new in wow, not something I have already seen before, at least not within wow. A new way to experience the game.

Ships sound like garrisons that have the option to choose and change the zone they are in. Your own personal, mobile, capital city is a huge convenience and makes the world seem larger. But can I use it out side of the south sea? If Alts are intended to be their own unique characters distinct from each other let them have some lasting presence when they log out. When my main visits an island where another of my character’s ship is moored, let me board it, let me use its facilities, and let me receives its zone buffs if any. And that kind of functionality should not be restricted to the South Sea, any costal zone in Azeroth should be navigable. That way a leveling alt can have a new quest chain when visiting a ship and an available buff or ability, hell let the zone scale down a max level toon so they can do the new quests.

    1. I love the bard class idea. While there are problems that come from a pure support class, I think it could be a very welcome addition. I will say that sadly, with the way Blizzard works, if they were to add such a class it would go like this:

      Bard class introduced
Bard buffs groups, makes everything super easy
Raids begin to recruit Bards like mad
Blizz tries to adjust mechanics to negate Bard powers
      Bards become required for raids
Nerf comes in, Bards still powerful but less so
2nd nerf comes in because ____, Bard class now greatly changed, much less useful

Maybe I'm just being pessimistic. Okay, I know I am. I still would like to see this.

And I think there is a large mass of people that would like the alts on our accounts to be able to interact when we are on-line with our other characters. That's because for many of us they are more than bank alts or profession mules, they are characters.

      But that's another rant.

    2. Never discount the small things. To me I think the small things matter most sometimes. My favorite changes this expansion? Stacking to 200 for materials, the reagent tab, things like that.

I would think it would take less effort to add a healing spec for a hunter than three completely new specs for a shadow stalker.

They could easily add a 4th spec for a hunter, shadow stalker, a 4th spec for a DK, necromancer, and a 4th spec for a warlock, demon hunter, for the same effort as adding a new class. With the added bonus of they do not need to add new class specific stuff like gear sets and such for them.

      @Casually Odd

I do not think there is a place in blizzard design for a support class. The players would never play it, or very few would. Good idea yes, some interesting game play to be added, sure, but would people play it, that has to be the top question and I think the answer to that would be no.

I would rather see them disassemble the holy trinity first so there is no such thing as a tank, healer and damage dealer, than to add a 4th thing like support into the system. But I do not think that could work either. Not in this war craft universe at least.

As for "alts" I would love to see them get the FF 14 treatment. If you do not know, they do not have alts. To put it in wow terms. If I wanted to switch from my hunter to my druid, I would just unequip my bow and equip my polearm. Tada, same character, both classes. That is how they do alts. They each need to be leveled independently, but my one character is all classes depending on what weapon I have on.

    3. @ Grumpy Elf

I think you are right that the support class wouldn't work in WoW. Which is sad but the truth of things.

I think disassembling the holy trinity could be good, but every game that I've heard that tries it, really hasn't nailed it. Not saying it shouldn't be attempted, but just haven't seen it yet.

I may yet try FF14. That does sound interesting. That means my altitis will move into racial/gender mode since I can be all classes with the same character.

For a bard I would envision their spells/talents to scale based off the group content they are in. Case in point, a bard in 40 man content would have a hefty buff added to their group spells/enchants, and cooldowns but a hefty nerf to their direct damage and health spells

Alternately when soloing or in small parties the opposite would be true, they would receive a hefty nerf to their party based spells (basically becoming an aura) but their direct casts would receive a hefty buff nearing them to a standard DPS or Healer depending on the spec.

I always thought something close to this was needed for healers and under geared tanks when questing, allowing them to scale down their spec’s spells in order to do more damage.

      @Grumpy
I think alts are here to stay, so I think its finally time for them to have a presence in the game. I found Draenor’s lone hero founds a garrison story line to be odd, in part because WoW is the story of a group of adventures coming together to save the world from ‘X’, not Larry’s journey of real estate acquisition, and homeless he occasionally groups with.
As to making pets tanks or healers, I think its an issue of ensuring that every mechanic in prior bosses works with your new spec. Having both a character and a pet that now needs to move out of aoe’s is example of a change in the game thats more complex than just adding a new range healer/dps to the mix.

If anyone could make the removal of the holy trinity work, it is blizzard. As much as I might complain about them, they really put their all into something when they try to run with someone else's idea. That is one thing that makes wow great after all these years, when they see something in other games, that make it their own. No better example can be said than pet battles. Love them or hate them, when it comes to integrating another games idea into wow, they did an exemplary job.

      @Rick

It would have been fun for garrisons to be shared between all your alts, and they would be running around when you are on one of the others. Not to mention this would have completely negated the garrison burnout that I think has effected each and every one of us to some level at some point this expansion.

Alts might be here to stay, but that does not mean they can not become more connected than they currently are.

But honestly, there are too many classes who can heal, don't ya think? Priests, shamen and shawomen, monks, druids, and that other, oh yeah, Paladin.

    Honestly, why one more class?

    1. It does seem weird to be shooting people with healing bullet or arrows. Wonder how they will work it. In wildstar how they did it was because it was futuristic the lasers the gun shot were healing ones instead of damage ones, which made more sense than in our fantasy setting.

I don't know why a new class so I can not say. I am with you asking why? Even more so, why this one. There is no need for it.

    2. Borderlands (2?) the marine could take a 'healing' talent that would allow him to shoot his team and heal them (after they took a little damage). It felt odd. You'd see little splashes of blood, but also watch them heal.

    3. Never played borderlands 2.

Shooting with bullets seems weird. I can accept shooting with lasers, lasers can heal or hurt in fantasy, but magically healing bullets? I can suspend believe a lot for a game, but that is asking too much.

  10. Ok, not to sidetrack the post, but a Troll themed expac? Alliance is going to **LOVE** that.. Blizz loves the HORDE!

    1. At least they are not orcs. :P

I can see people complaining about it already. But hey, we had an expansion without a troll raid, have to have a troll expansion to catch up.

As far as story telling and lore in game goes, alliance players know they are second class citizens. As long as Metzen is in charge the alliance will never see any meaningful lore in game again.

    3. Afaik, Metzen plays human paladin, so he probably doesn't want to make Alliance villains. Lorewise, Alliance races have either recently coped with inner problems (Westfall conspiracy v.2, uniting 3 dwarf clans), struggling to survive and win some place for themselves (Worgen, Gnomes) or don't care about world domination and just want to be left alone (NE, Draenei). Jaina claimed Dalaran for herself, married a blue dragon Kalecgos and didn't even follow Garrosh with us. There's no point to play villain for any of them.

Anyways, you need a monster face as a major villain. Orcs, dragons, trolls, skeletons fit.

    4. He also has a very unhealthy obsession with Thrall, it is like he is in love with him. He is horde all the way, human paladin or not, he is horde.

There are so many good alliance stories to delve into that they ignore. As you mentioned with worgens and gnomes, they still have unfinished stories of their homes and the leadership of the dwarves? There is a lot to be explored there. Even Jaina, goes from loves everyone to hates orcs, to just doesn't care because she is all emo now probably cutting herself in a tower somewhere. None of these stories needs these people being "villains" but they are stories that could be explored in a five man dungeon, a side raid, anything that might give alliance some exposure, but that will never fly as long as the blizzard ruling party is all "for the horde" the story will never change.
