I believe one of the final fantasy games has a weather element to it, 12 if I am not mistaken. Not sure. Different mobs were up during different types of weather. In some games it could be interesting if done well.TheGrumpyElfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07621615711198405365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-69212992988379835202014-02-17T08:32:00.978-05:002014-02-17T08:32:00.978-05:00Maybe it depends on the game. If the game put its emphasis on the world/simulation aspect, it could be great !
It is the same in real life : going to Disneyland on a rayny day is not veryy fun. Whereas a good storm when you are near the sea could a lot of fun ! - for the tourist, not the home owner ;-).Ettesiunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12910627709133317584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-5786831430374394592014-02-14T17:13:53.584-05:002014-02-14T17:13:53.584-05:00That was a greifers playground. Don't blame the design there, blame the people that play the game.

A constant safe zone, or zones if you will, would be an excellent idea whenever they add things like that.TheGrumpyElfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07621615711198405365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-47199732219829216672014-02-14T17:12:42.114-05:002014-02-14T17:12:42.114-05:00I agree that there would be much hate for it from ...I agree that there would be much hate for it from a, probably, decent portion of the community but like you said, it was a nice break from the grind.

World events, like love is in the air running now, are such a thing, but only when there is something to get from them.

I think I finished most achievements and got most of the things I needed from world events in 2009 and finished it off with a few missed things in 2010. God how I hate the PvP parts. Over the years when they added a new toy or mount I could get it. Now I only do the dungeons for mount drops as I still need a few, like the love rocket.

They worked in that break from the grind area and I would like to see more of that. I do wonder if I am alone there or if there are others that just want more of the same, as in raiding. Even as a raider, that just isn't enough for me. I want something to take a break from it from time to time.TheGrumpyElfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07621615711198405365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-10415400836184178502014-02-14T12:49:34.317-05:002014-02-14T12:49:34.317-05:00Personally, I hated the pre-LK scenario. Now if ceratin areas had been set up as "safe zones" (like being able to board up the windows and doors in an inn), then it would have been fun. But there were none and for the time it lasted, I didn't play - it wasn't fun.

And if you notice, Blizzard hasn't brought out anything like that since - I would bet that they got tons of complaints.

-roo-abhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14899567485973250660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-22466601171154930062014-02-14T10:06:42.525-05:002014-02-14T10:06:42.525-05:00As much fun as your ideas sound, sadly I feel it w...As much fun as your ideas sound, sadly I feel it would not be received well. Remember all the hub-bub over the pre-LK event? For as many people out there that loved it, there were probably 10 times (or more) the amount that hated it because it interfered with questing/AH'n/whatever-else-they-wanted-to-do.

I personally loved the LK event and tried my damnedest to stay alive as a ghoul as long as I could running between Stormwind, Redridge and Duskwood. It was the spontanaity (sp?) of it all that I loved. A goofy break from the grind of leveling/dungeoning/raiding is always welcome at my front door.

While you were describing the weather effects that could happen in Dun Morogh I instantly thought of having ice slicks randomly appear that would make your toon fall flat on his/her face while running over one. Or large slicks where your mount would slip and slide more than you bob and weave when wicked drunk. Those would be two funny things to watch happening.Jstmelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14423675330687776883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-61034247985498119972014-02-14T05:58:31.045-05:002014-02-14T05:58:31.045-05:00They seem to be pushing toward more events type th...They seem to be pushing toward more events type things like on the timeless island with the rattleskew event and the beer garden event but even those are timed somewhat and predictable. I doubt they would ever go pure random, but they might go more event heavy in time if people like it and they did on the island.

I like the pirate attack idea. Key there that you mentioned is to keep things scaled so everyone can enjoy it. I think that has to be the future of the game, content designed for all, not just end game.TheGrumpyElfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07621615711198405365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-21181397504507691802014-02-14T05:55:48.129-05:002014-02-14T05:55:48.129-05:00The pre cataclysm event was something that popped ...The pre cataclysm event was something that popped into mind when I was writing this. The idea of random ...Anon, Grumpy's former GL:

The idea of random world events in WoW is one I approve of in theory, but I doubt that Blizzard would ever devote the resources to making it happen.

Weather indeed would make for a good random event, but there are things that could occur also that would be interesting. An example would be a chance of a pirate attack every time a boat left a harbor, perhaps a 1% to 10% chance per voyage depending on the route.

Have the attack scaled to the level of the ship crew and passengers, with rewards appropriate to the level for a successful defense and a graveyard resurrection at the destination graveyard for an unsuccessful defense. After all there are all the pirates in game already, so put them to use in this random scenario for all levels.

Of course I don't anticipate Blizzard ever doing such, either random weather events nor any other repeating world events beyond the occasional world boss type thing. But it is nice to think of what could be and maybe Blizzard will have a similar brain storm at some point or another. I like the idea of different creatures being out at different times of day, that is a good one.TheGrumpyElfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07621615711198405365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-65713096929349304972014-02-13T18:07:41.147-05:002014-02-13T18:07:41.147-05:00the whole idea of a better day/night cycle is some...the whole idea of a better day/night cycle is something I always wanted. During the night humanoid types would sleep. And night creatures would be out. During the day a whole different cycle of bad things would be out and about. I also believe night should be darker and with no way to toggle it off.

Rain showers with wind would be cool as well as snow actually being something that one would have to over come - snow shoes and heavy jackets anyone?. But alas, it will not come to past, as folks want it easy-peasy - more raids with uber bosses or uber pvp gear.

Nice idea though. -abhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14899567485973250660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-65160910195922135462014-02-13T14:59:02.941-05:002014-02-13T14:59:02.941-05:00I am really of the same opinion on it as you said ...I am really of the same opinion on it as you said in the end. I think it is a great idea but I don't think it could be done. At least not as a random event thing. Maybe as a one area things during some event or some sort, but not much more. It does seem fun to think up ideas like that sometimes and get carried away with all the things that could be done.TheGrumpyElfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07621615711198405365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9015737272343810105.post-29505070820696218832014-02-13T14:27:02.820-05:002014-02-13T14:27:02.820-05:00Nah, I don't think I'd want this... back w...Nah, I don't think I'd want this... back when you could actually set a weather level I always had it minimized. I'm fine with a bit of sun/overcast or even rain plus a day/night cycle but nothing extreme beyond that, certainly nothing that would impact gameplay.

Mainly because the results would only be negative... nothing would IMPROVE in snow (unless your mount could toboggan down a hill, maybe). Hurricanes and fishing up documents could be seen as insensitive toward those impacted by serious weather events.

I just played through Arcanum and it had some pretty signficant weather and day/night effects... and they bugged me more than I expected. Night wasn't so bad but while the first part of the game was a mix of sunny/cloudly, I'd swear the last half of the game was entirely night/rainy... gloomy as hell. I still got through it but I would have preferred the option to lighten things up.

That also leads to the debate about darker nights being a possible option in WoD... if I had that option I'd try it out but I'd probably turn it off and forget the option was even there shortly afterward. I expect most would... the IDEA is great but I don't think people would actually want it from a gameplay perspective.Rnoreply@blogger.com
