40 Man Raiding is Back for 10th Anniversary

Based on the announcement of Molten Core being rereleased as a max level 40 man raid for the 10th anniversary, see here, we have something to be excited about again, at least for a limited time.

I am normally against remaking content but in a case like this with a limited time raid I think it is a wonderful idea.  If it were part of the regular rotation of things we would do, like the remade dungeons, it would quickly lose its luster just like the dungeons do after you complete them once or twice but to have something like this available for a limited time only is a good thing in my mind.   I just hope they give it enough time so everyone can get a shot at getting into it.

With so little to look forward to lately, like the expansion (see last post), something from the past that is limited time only actually seems like just what the doctor ordered and it is sad that we have to wait until November for it.  The game needs this now more than it needs it in November.

We have two ways this could turn out.  We either get warlords in october and then a bunch of people that are slow to level will miss out on it because they are not max level or we get to wait even longer for warlords and we have some fun content for the first time in over a year to play with while we wait for release.  Next week we will know which one it is but if it is a october release I just have one thing to say, do not slack off on leveling, you will want to join in on the fun.

When you complete the 10th anniversary molten core you will get a core hound as a mount and everyone loves free mounts right?  You will also get a molten corgi just for logging in during the 10th anniversary.  Get it?  Molten "core"gi.

There is more to look forward to for the 10th anniversary than just revisiting molten core in its original 40 man incarnation, there will be a new limited time battleground called Tarren Mill vs Southshore with ideas of bringing the old school feel of world PvP back to the game.  Not sure how well it will work in instanced content but it sure is worth looking into even if you are not into PvP.

For a player like myself who did not first experience the game until BC was out for a while having a chance to take part, even if only in flashback mode, in the molten core 40 man raids and the tarren mill vs southshore battles will be something that is something to look forward to.  I know it could never match the feeling that it had for the people that actually participated in it but for me it is as close as I will ever get.

The reason I think I am most excited about this is because it is for a limited time only.  It makes it feel like "must do" content.  Something that not only will I look forward to doing but something that I have to do at a certain time or I will not get to do it.  That is a feeling that very rarely makes its way into the game.  What is even more exciting about it is that everyone will be put together in the raid finder because molten core will only be available in raid finder mode and that greatly increases the chances that you will get a good group.

The way raid finder currently is you rarely if ever find a great deal of good players in there because there are so many other ways to better see the content and gear up as in flex or normal or heroic, even if you are low geared and need to be carried by your friends.  Anything is better than LFR which normally means raiders stay away from it if they are capable of doing so and that will not happen here.  So even the most casual of casual players might very well get a chance to run with a world first or server first type player, something they might never have the chance to do otherwise.  All thanks to one very open ended difficulty level, for a limited run, that encourages the entire player base to play together instead of giving each type of player their own playground.

I might not like what blizzard has in store for us with warlords, but I am most definitely excited for what they have in store for us for the 10th anniversary.

So what do you think about the limited time?  The return of 40 man raiding?  The reimagining of world PvP? And of course our soon to be new mount and pet?

I am looking forward to it, all of it.  Even as someone that dislikes LFR and is not a PvPer.  See blizzard, you can make content that makes people want to participate, you just need to go back to vanilla to do it. ;)

Sigh, this sounds so much like something I would enjoy doing but I doubt that I will be eligible to participate due to a lack of ilevel gear of sufficient quality. This may be the only time in a long time that I regret dropping out of the raiding scene. Also, no, I don't want help catching up on gear to be able to participate. I choose to not participate previously of my own free will, and now, if I can't participate in a revised, limited time only offer, then so be it--but it sure does sound like it could be fun to revisit Molten Core.

    1. It will be at level 100 with the ease of a holiday boss so it should be doable by a group of freshly dinged 100s in quest gear so you have nothing to worry about. Just get to level 100.

    2. As mentioned you would be fine. It will be after the expansion comes out and all you will need to do is be level 100. For a limited time event and something they would like everyone to be able to participate in I can not see them setting anything that might even remotely be considered a high requirement. And like it or not, if you need help to get some gear you know we would gladly give it to you. Heck, last night we could have dragged you to SoO and you would have gotten a ton of stuff that just ended up being disenchanted.

  2. I hope we get some decent Hydraxian rep for it. Still working on that snail's pace of a rep grind.

    1. I wonder if it will give rep. Did not even think of that. I've been done with it for a few years but being it is LFR if it gives rep I could see doing it over and over and over again to max out rep quick. That would be cool for the people willing to do it.

  3. I'll do both these two limited time things, but, honesty, I am not too thrilled. The raid is going to be a zerg and the bg is going to be a zerg as well. If there are no drops or achievements, I will do the raid once and do the bg for maybe an hour or so. That's fine, of course, because it's just the celebration event, but the elephant in the room is still that we don't have an expansion.

I have little doubt that the expansion will go after this event, not before (we'll soon know), perhaps in November. That means something like 3 and a half months from now. It's a long time from now. Even if it is the end of September (completely unrealistic in my opinion) and it's 2 months from now, that's too long as well. I mean, really, I don't know what I am going to be doing. Heck, I am not sure what I was doing for the last month or so already. If it weren't for pet battles, it would have been a big fat nothing (or leveling alts, yeah, so entertaining...), and, sadly, pet battles seem to come to an end, I have more or less 'finished' them, got 98% of the pets, did all trainers / legendary pets / celestial tournament, leveled about a hundred pets to 25, made something like twenty comps for PVP, won about 500 PVP battles at level 25, everything. I am missing several achievements for things like 5000 (and, for PVP, 1000) battles, and that's all. What else am I going to do now? Continue with the rare mounts and two remaining legendaries, I guess... Yeah, that's so interesting...

The pet is nice, though, thanks for it. I feared it might have landed in the shop.

    1. I think this will come out after the expansion because it only makes sense. They are announcing the release date next week and they have released 2 months after the date announcement every single expansion, so it is reasonable to believe that they will do that again, meaning the expansion will be out the second week of october and if later, 3rd week at most.

The PvP battles achievement goes to 5K. I lost my interest in pet battles before they added that or I would have went for it, but as it stands I have something like 2 PvP pet battle wins at level 25. I am sure I will get back into it at some point.

  4. I am guesstimating that both events will be out in WoD only , because the tarren mill vs southshore map was added to the one of the recent beta builds, so that means expansion will have a late october/ early november release.

    1. The tm vs ss was actually called troll raid 2 on the alpha and has been there since it was first datamined. It is not something that is "new" to the beta. Just renamed to be more accurate. Someone on mmoc posted they found the map some months ago and noticed it was the tm and ss maps and was wondering why it was called troll raid 2.

But yes, it will be out in october.

  5. Heard the (very logical) arguments for why the anniversary stuff should be out after the new expansion....

...but I'm still only half-convinced, unless it's level 90 content.

It seems like a bad idea to immediately roll out time-limited special events that would *require* players to burn through the leveling content in the expansion really quickly.

If Blizz made it level 90 content, you'd get the same encouragement to get the expansion and could actually extend the life of the leveling content a bit.

(Of course, my pessimistic side wonders if they won't announce this as part of a *pre-expansion patch* that would go out in October -- giving players something to do new for a few weeks and letting Blizz delay the actual expansion into November or early Dec).

    1. Blizzard could very well push it further back, I just do not see that happening. Not only the timing thing of the announcement but the fact they are really scrambling now to push as fast as possible. I think they "want" an october release because it sure seems like they are moving with that in mind.

I really hope they do not try and say that the 10th anniversary thing is out pre expansion thing. That would be so cheap, but I would not put is past them for sure.

  6. I think the expansion will hit in Late November or early December. Reason being that Blizzcon is November 7-8 and I don't think they are gonna want that happening during the first few weeks after expansion release.

The anniversary event feels like pre-expansion content to tide us over. So in November we will have the 6.0 Iron Horde questlines, and new Molten Core Raid and new BG. Something to appeal to everybody. And keep players happy til December when the expansion hits.

Or maybe they really have their shit together, and the expansion will hit October 13th, like some are predicting. The QQ of people that don't make it to 100 before the end of november though, and therefore miss out on new MC will be earsplitting though.

    1. There is some reasonable arguments to it being that late, as you mentioned with blizzcon but in my opinion the best argument for october 14th is the fact that every expansion they have made thus far has come out 2 months after the date for release was given.

I do hope that is not the pre expansion thing, that would suck hugely. I want a real pre expansion event, we have not had a decent one in while. It would really be "cheap" of them to try and piggy back this as both a pre expansion thing and a 10th anniversary thing, but I guess I would not put it past them.
